Jeff Jarvis on a shared Google pressroom
Another interesting article from today's Guardian, again this was something that I mentioned on the Graphics blog. One of the problems with this idea of death of print or death of newspapers is that online media doesn't alter the content(well it can do if you read Charlie Brookers article), the content isn't dying- the medium is. The journalistic quality of The Guardian is still there and online

It's a funny article but raises some interesting points. There's a relevance to the discussion we had on the Graphics site the other week about the death of print. If publishers are generating revenue through advertising, is this a knock on effect and how does it effect content?
And wait, it gets worse. These phrases don't just get lobbed in willy-nilly

MURIEL COOPER and the VISIBLE LANGUAGE
WORKSHOP
By David Reinfurt
"Muriel Cooper always sought more responsive systems
of design and production, emphasizing quicker feedback
loops between thinking and making, often blurring
the distinction between the two. As a result, she always
left room for the reader. This text is an attempt to do
the same."

This is really amazing stuff, Mark posted a quote about her Bahaus movie on the Graphics blog. Whenever I find things like this I think a couple of things, one I'm not alone, two am I really stupid and why haven't I read this before.

Dialogue
hi,
firstly Id like to apologise for my lack of involvement within the publication. I been extremely busy trying to tie up loose ends within my work and havent had chance to make any of the meetings.
I have a few ideas that Ive found interesting involving the word dialogue. I found a interesting blog:
http://dienekes.blogspot.com/2005/10/science-of-chat-up-lines.html
Which talks about chat up lines and the science behind them. I found this statement interesting that a chat up line can be interpreted within a scientific boundary. I find the whole chat up line idea quite intriguing as it's dialogue in it's purest form as it's talking direct to a stranger in a provocative way. I also think the whole approach between man and woman and how the traditions of a man to make a move have become the norm
Also ive mentioned this before in a past comment, that I had created my project through overhearing phrases in the public house i work in. I got this idea from the website: http://www.overheardinnewyork.com/
This is interesting as it shows the level of stupidity that as become stereotypical of america. I have however found that this same trait is applicable within leeds and the colourful array characters it inhibit and the conversations they have been worthy to create a project on.
within my learning agreement i researched alot into olympic design campaigns. I especially looked into the current london 2012 log and how this is sparked a debate between current designers, olympic ambassaders and the general public. Everybody is currently aware that we have done quite well within the current games and this should improve when we host the games. Although a lot of people believe that the logo and the campaign is not a way in which us as a nation want to represented as a lot of people have called the logo a bland, illegible mess.
Here is the current logo:http://blog.brainstormbrand.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/06/olympics_2012.jpg
And heres an example of the debate:http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/2008/2007-06/05/content_887412.htmmore....

The Graphic Design Library
Here's a revised version of the last proposal, I can't be in the meeting tonight untill about 7. I think something along these lines directed at the reader would be usefull, hopefully it deals with the points made last week, its more direct and outlines the aims and means.
The Graphic Design Library
The Leeds Metropolitan MA Graphic Arts and Design candidates are inviting you to become part of an exhibition which will be based in the library from 18th - 25th August .
We will be using the Civic Quarter Library to create Graphic work which looks at the relationship between us and you, the designer and the viewer.
Members of the MA group will be using the library to collect and present a set of images and texts which will act as starting points for some creative dialogue.
You the viewer are asked to respond to these starting points in a way which adds to or links them to other images and texts, a sort of post and comment. Your response can be made either by attending the exhibition where you will be issued with a copy card to collect sources from the library or by submitting images digitally.
We will then use the resources in the library to expand upon and respond to, the contributions which we receive.
The material collected will be posted up on a series of boards, each containing the original starting point, where we will start to organize and edit the information.
We will use this information to produce a publication. We will give you the participant, a number of options to choose from informing us of how you wish to receive this publication.
( example ) The choices are as follows: 1 A6 postcard, 1 A5 booklet , 1 A2 poster, 1 JPEG.

Graphic Design in the Library
Following the meeting last Wednesday, this is a proposal for a workshop which will act as a companion to the formal MA exhibition.
Graphic Design in the Library. An exercise in practical research and the role of the designer.
When using the internet for research and discussion we can easily drop in images and links from other sites to illustrate our thoughts and ideas. We have the facility to do this and it feels natural as part of a digital dialogue.
Presenting our work in a gallery space doesn't offer a dialogue. Graphic design as an exhibition presents a set of outcomes, finalized and impenetrable.
Can we present an alternative model, creating a fluid space for graphic work to be made and shown? Is there a way to communicate something of our working process?
This may be achieved through a workshop situation.
e.g. If a workshop were to be held in the library, there would be the facility to produce graphic materials from the range of sources available / an act which would echo the opportunity for cross referencing which we find on the internet.
Each student and visitor is issued with a photocopy card, to collect sources from the Library ( we may provide suggested links and areas of investigation placed around the building ). The images collected by each person are then used to compose a poster which can be arranged on a series of large pin boards. These posters are to be made by members of the course.
Those who are involved or join the group can then request a version of the posters from a selection of formats. These ' formats ' will be the outcome of our workshop, our audience will be those who have chose to join us either as contributors or as viewers, those who have engaged in the dialogue.

A challenge.
The future will be dictated by environmental necessity and time because everything produced takes time.
It boils down to 3 resources:
How much of the following should the designer use to make their work:
Printed matter?
The internet?
Time?
Can we produce work that requires no resources at all?
Other than time of course.
Which is infinite.

Online Meeting 4
This is really a continuation from last week but I'm placing it here as a starting point for thinking about how we might approach print within our plans for a publication.
The following text is by David Reinfurt . 'This stands as a sketch for the future: Muriel Cooper and the Visible Language Workshop appeared in Dot Dot Dot Fifteen .
' On completing the book, Muriel Cooper made a sixteen millimeter film flipping through its pages to create a stop frame animation. The book's contents shift around the page, defining the grid that structures its design. The Bauhaus book film then became the after image of her design process. It projected out from the hard physical form of the book to suggest a near-future when publishing would be as fluid as film, feedback immediate and users / makers would be all but indistinguishable. '
Talking about how print publishing may be as fluid as film in 1968, Reinfurt talks about immediacy. Immediacy now dominates the way we consume and contribute content, its also a contributing factor in a declining print publishing industry.
Monday's MediaGuardian highlighted the challenges faced by the newspaper publishers as more readers consumed content online. The writer attributed this partly to 'disintermediation by the web' refering to investment from the advertising industry.
Disintermediation
1. In finance, withdrawal of funds from intermediary financial institutions, such as banks and savings and loan associations, in order to invest them directly.
2. Generally, removing the middleman or intermediary.
In relation to print, the web presents a form of disintermediation which has been discussed in previous conversations on this site. Why do we need to collect and information as print when it can be accessed as more direct forms online? What is the role of the designer?
Any publication we make should address this. The example of Muriel Cooper shows how the technology of the near future in 1968 offered to liberate print, the recent report on struggling publishers shows how technology is questioning how we consume content traditionally published as print.
As a group thinking of creating a publication we should think about the process we use to collect and generate dialogue on this site. We have used this forum over the past weeks as a primary source for discussion, before that we have used it as a tool for creating naratives between our individual interests.
This is a source for creating content in a collaborative way.
To take on board the influence of web 2.0 and consider a role for print we should create a publication which consists only of material generated or collected on this or relating sites. The resulting document would examine the use of both web and print based process.

When My Father Went Into Service by Pat Richard
At one time Fairbanks, Louisiana, was the only place my father,O’Neal McHenry knew existed. After having married and becoming a father, O'Neal wanted to provide for his family and joining the navy was that opportunity. What jobs were available in1945 for blackman--ships cook. How was he going to obtain the certificate--since it required knowing his multiplication tables--and he only had a 4th grade education. Thanks to the Chief Naval Officer who took an interest in my dad and gave him the multiplication tables to study. Learning the tables was not an easy task. Besides the invaluable help of his shipmates, who had high school and college diplomas , O'Neal slept with with book under his pillow praying that he would remember the tables. Passing the exam was what would need to become a ships cook. When the day came to take the exam, he was anxious, but all his hard work payed off. O'Neal passed with flying colors--only missing two of the questions. That diploma was his ticket to a better life and enabled him to later employed by Louisiana Training Institute in Monroe, LA that gave him the salary to provide for his family.

A Journey to Freedom
In the early morning of Christmas Day in 1980, my family (including my parents, my brother and me) boarded a bus, which was already packed with families and headed to Tan-Son- NhutAirport in Saigon, Vietnam, for departingto the United States of America. In the airport, everybody had to go through a slow and complicated process of paper work and a very thorough luggage check-in before boarding the Air France flight and flying to Thailand. At that time, I was finally relieved to leave this war-torn country where I grew up and now was occupied by the communists. It was late afternoon when we arrived in Bangkok, Thailand. We got into a bus and were driven to an abundant huge house, where we had to go through another long process of paper work before being transferred to a “Refugee Camp” outside of the city. Each family was given a mat to cover the cement floor, a sheet to use as a blanket, and a room without any window or door to stay.Exhausted, we all went to sleep at 2:00 am in the morning. Luckily, on December 30, after only four days, my family became one of the few families that had been selected to leave the camp and depart for America.Seattle, Washington was our first stop when we arrived in the United States on New Year’s Eve of 1980.In the airport, we again had to go through the same process of paper work, but this time it was done by the experienced (ICEM) personnel who were very kind and helpful and there were friendly faces everywhere in the airport. After the process, we got on a bus and went to a military hospital which had been changed into a “Welcome Camp” for the immigrant families. Here we ate our first real dinner since we left Vietnam and spent a sweet night in our comfortable beds. At last, we said good-bye to Seattle and flew to our final destination – Boston, Massachusettson January 2, 1981.The moment I saw my sister Amy, who was our sponsor, I forgot all the hardships that we went through in the past week, because happiness filled my heart and left no place for sorrow. I was very thankful that my parents could survive with us without any burden.I was looking forward to having a new life in this country because I had a lot to learn and I wanted to build my future in this land of freedom, where trying hard and working hard makes dreams come true. Although I had the worst Christmas in 1980, I had the best year in 1981 and I also realized that only the one who has once lost freedom will treasure it the most! After three months training in a career center in Boston, I landed a job in State Street Bank where I worked for six years. In 1985 I got married to a wonderful man, whom I still love for twenty-three years.Due to a better job opportunity, my husband and I moved to California in March 1988 and we found our sweet home in Roseville, where our son was born in August the same year. Now he has grown up into a fine young man and is a Junior at UC Berkeley. Nowadays I'm still working as a part-time page in Downtown Roseville Library for almost five years and my husband still works for Agilent Technologies.I feel very blessed and very fortunate whenever I look back at my journey to this land of freedom where anything will become possible if you stand positively!more info

Kidulthood trailer
Gritty, raw and brutally frank, “Kidulthood” goes deep into London’s hidden underbelly and delivers a hard-hitting reflection of what life is really like for 21st century teenagers. In a world where sex is currency, drugs are easy and violence is a way of life, trouble can never be too far behind.“Kidulthood” is sure to stun audiences when it is released on DVD by Image Entertainment on November 11.
This isn't child's play…it's just another day in the inner city, where teenage growing pains can often lead to suicide, pregnancy and hot-blooded murder. The film follows 15-year-old Trife, a boy trapped between the world of his school friends, the girl he loves and the draw of his powerful and dangerous uncle. When classes are suspended after a bullied schoolgirl hangs herself rather than face another day of torment, Trife and his crew take to the streets where sex and drugs are a way of life and violence lurks behind every corner.Powerful, disturbing and moving, “Kidulthood” is "as potent as a shot of vodka before breakfast" (Daily Mirror), a hardcore look at lost innocence and wasted youth.
